Drivewise: making behavior-based insurance feel simple

When I joined the project, Drivewise was already a familiar name to many Allstate customers—but the product was changing. Once a safe-driving rewards tool, it was about to become a real-time pricing engine: one that could now lower or raise your rate based on how you drive. The screens hadn’t kept up.

The problems:

  • The experience was built to treat Drivewise like a bonus feature—not a core pricing factor.

  • Users saw charts and scores but had little understanding of what affected them. The content didn’t explain the behaviors being measured.

  • Since rates could now go up, not just down, there was no strategy in place for how to handle that shift in trust or expectation.

That’s where I came in.

What I delivered

  • A reimagined onboarding flow: I helped introduce the product in plain language, explaining how it worked, what it tracked, and how users could save—while setting expectations about price changes.

  • A better way to understand your driving: I wrote content that broke down each tracked behavior—speeding, phone use, hard braking, and time of day—and paired it with friendly, helpful tips. The tone stayed encouraging even when the scores weren’t.

  • Thoughtful feedback when rates went up or down: I crafted celebratory moments when users locked in savings, and I delivered the bad news with clarity when their rates increased.
